Visit Japan Web

Travellers create an account, enter passport and personal details once, and then register each trip with arrival date, flight and address in Japan. For each trip they fill in the immigration information and the customs declaration. The service then shows a single QR code that covers both.

Family members travelling together, such as children, can be added as companions to one account, and each person receives a code. The information can be prepared well in advance and edited until arrival.

At supported airports, the QR code is scanned at immigration together with the passport, and again at customs at an electronic declaration gate or counter. At some airports, joint kiosks handle immigration and customs pre-registration in one step. Fingerprints and a photograph are still taken at immigration.

At airports and seaports where the digital procedure is not available, travellers fill in the paper forms as before. The official Visit Japan Web site lists where the service can be used.

Visit Japan Web is intended for short-term visitors and returning Japanese nationals. Foreign residents with a residence card use it only for customs, not for immigration, and some travellers, such as crew members or those entering on special statuses, follow other procedures. Using it is not a condition for entry: the decision on entry remains with the immigration officer.

Visit Japan Web has also been linked to tax-free shopping, where it can store passport information for purchases and, under the refund system that Japan introduces from 1 November 2026, can be used for the export check at departure.
